LED outdoor display IP waterproof grade explained
IP (Ingress Protection) protection level is the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC 60529) developed standards for the assessment of electronic equipment on solid foreign matter (such as dust) and liquid (such as water) protection ability. For LED outdoor display, the waterproof rating directly affects its stability and service life in different environments. The following is a detailed introduction to the common IP waterproof grade and the applicable scene:
First, IP protection grade composition
IP grade consists of two numbers:
the first number (0-6): dustproof grade, indicating the ability to protect against solid particles.
The second number (0-9): waterproof rating, indicating the ability to protect against liquids.
For example:
IP65: Fully dustproof (class 6), waterproof (class 5).
IP68: completely dustproof (level 6), continuous immersion protection (level 8).
Second, LED outdoor display common IP levels and characteristics
1. IP54 Outdoor LED Display
waterproof ability: splash-proof (no damage to water spray in any direction).
Applicable scenes:
temporary outdoor activities (short-term exhibitions, festivals).
Rainy but no strong water pressure environment.
Limitations:
Cannot withstand high pressure water jets or prolonged rain.
Long-term exposure to inclement weather is not recommended.
2. IP65 Outdoor Digital Billboard
waterproof ability: anti-low-pressure water spray (nozzle diameter 6.3mm, water pressure 30kPa, distance 3 meters continuous water spray for 3 minutes).
Applicable scenarios:
conventional outdoor advertising screens (e.g. shopping mall facades, bus stops).
Low to medium risk environment in rainy areas.
Advantage:
affordable, meet most of the outdoor rainproof needs.
Excellent dustproof performance, effectively blocking sand and dust.
3. IP66 Outdoor LED Video Wall
waterproof capability: anti-high-pressure water spray (nozzle diameter 12.5mm, water pressure 100kPa, distance 3 meters continuous water spray for 3 minutes).
Applicable scenes:
seaside cities, industrial areas and other environments susceptible to strong winds and heavy rain or water spray impact.
Places that need regular high-pressure flushing (such as gas stations, parking lots).
Features:
The seams of the box are sealed with multi-layer sealing rubber strips, which makes it more resistant to water pressure.
4. IP67 Outdoor LED Screens
waterproof ability: anti-short-term immersion (immersed in water depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes).
Applicable scenarios:
areas prone to waterlogging (e.g. low-lying areas, flood control dykes).
Frequent rainstorms or environments that may experience temporary flooding.
Design Points:
Waterproof breathable membrane is used to balance the internal air pressure and prevent water infiltration.
The power connector needs to meet IP68 level of independent protection.
5. IP68 Outdoor LED Video Wall
waterproof ability: anti-continuous immersion (water depth more than 1 meter, time specified by the manufacturer, usually more than 24 hours).
Applicable scenes:
underwater or near-water areas (such as swimming pools, fountain advertising screens).
Extremely bad weather (such as typhoons, flood-prone areas).
Technical difficulties:
Fully sealed LED Cabinet design, heat dissipation depends on external fins or liquid cooling system.
Higher cost, mostly used for special projects.
IP waterproof rating test standard water spray test (IPX5/IPX6):
using a standard nozzle to simulate rain or high-pressure water jet impact, testing seams and interface sealing.
Immersion test (IPX7/IPX8):
Immerse the display in a water tank and observe whether water enters inside.
Dustproof test (IP6X):
Run in a closed sandy environment for 8 hours to ensure that no dust enters.
